How Do You Tell If Your Workstation Isn’t Ergonomic?

Elizabeth Schnurr

Our bodies need to be moved, stretched, and used. That is why sitting for long durations may result in health issues, more so if your chair is not ergonomically designed. While most of us don’t give a second thought about our office chairs, we all should! Using ergonomic chairs is of utmost importance for your well-being, and an ErgoCentric office chair is an excellent option.

Identifying a workstation that is bad for your health and posture from an ergonomic one is not always easy. But you must learn to differentiate because you spend a significant portion of your life at work. Therefore, a comfortable workstation is a priority. We have pointed out three warning signs that call immediate attention to reassessing your workstation setup:

You are uncomfortable at the desk.

If you are uncomfortable at your workstation, you may be heading toward an injury. If you find yourself moving around trying to find a comfortable position in your chair, it is time to upgrade to an ergonomic one, like the ergocentric office chair. Ergonomic chairs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Choose one that suits your needs the best!

Other things to notice are the positioning of your mouse and keyboard, the height of your monitor screen, and the placement of the leg rest or footrest. Remember, the work environment should be such that it fits you, not vice versa.

You experience pain or bodily discomfort.

If you always experience bodily discomfort or pain at work, your workstation setup may be the culprit. Instead of blaming a niggling pain on lack of exercise or old age, take a look at your chairs and desks. Poorly designed work setup can lead to RSI or Repetitive Strain Injury. Some symptoms of RSI are muscle pain or tenderness, tingling sensation in arms or hands, and loss of sensation. These should not be taken lightly.

Pain in the lower back and shoulder region and a dull ache in the wrists or forearms are other signs telling you your workstation is not good news for your health.

Your posture has changed since you started office work.

A poor work setup leads to postural changes. The change may even be permanent. If you slump back into the chair or sit forward too often, the spine will get out of alignment. If you hunch over the keyboard, you can end up with rounded shoulders. Your chair must be a perfect fit.

These postural changes can be reversed by shifting to ergonomic workstations, stretching, and exercising.
